An ASOIAF ficlet I wrote for @alexprompts stamp out the rebellion prompt on tumblr. Takes place around the start of Clash of Kings because that’s where I am in the series. Joffrey is King. No one is pleased, including his Uncle Tyrion.

Tyrion looked at the streets of King’s Landing. How the mighty had fallen. At least when Robert was King the streets were teeming with food and people. There was very little food for sale, and what was on sale was less than half the quality and more than twice the price.

Most had fled King’s Landing. And why not? No one wanted to see Joffrey as the King. The boy was petulant, too young, and altogether a miserable, selfish little fuck. He was so much like his mother, but irrational where Cersei was strategic. They still shared the same conceit.

Somewhere after the man peddling “fresh rats,” Tyrion stopped to observe some writing on the wall.

“Stamp Out the Rebellion!”

Tyrion laughed, but it was a dry laugh with no humour. The words were clearly written in blood. Somehow, he doubted that it was animal blood. The blood of men was far easier to come by these days. He thought of the heads Joffrey had been keeping on spikes and the spikes he saved for Robb Stark, Renly and Stannis.

He wondered who in Joffrey’s service had taken the time to deface King’s Landing with this farce. Though they were few left, there were those that were still loyal to Cersei, or too afraid to tell Joffrey no.

Was it worse if Joffrey had commanded the crude vandalism, or if the fools Cersei had giving Joffrey “counsel” had taken it upon themselves? Surely, they told the boy King all kinds of lies about how Westerfall was supporting him and painting the situation as far less dire than it was. Would Joffrey eat up the lies?

Yes, he would, Tyrion thought to himself. He was raised by to believe whatever suited him best. Reality be damned.

Tyrion thought of Robb Stark, not much older than Joffrey, but with a much better head on his shoulders. He thought of Renly who would get things done, and Stannis the serious.

I wonder if my dear sister has any more of that wine she gave Robert.
